Delbarton Win Eighth Straight

In one of the biggest rivalries in New Jersey lacrosse, Delbarton School defeated Summit High School in a close 9-8 match on April 24.  Entering the game ranked 15th in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, Delbarton entered the game with a perfect 7-0 record.  Summit, though not ranked in the national table, hold their own on the field, with an 8-1 record before Wednesday’s game.

Due to excellent defensive displays, both teams struggled to get started on offense.  After much back-and-forth play, Summit struck first when senior Matt Maier found the back of the net.  Delbarton managed to control the ball for the remainder of the quarter, tying the game before the end of the quarter with a goal from Robbie Arancio.  Both teams scored two goals each in the second quarter, bringing the game to a 3-3 tie at the half.

Using the halftime break to recuperate, Delbarton came out with a strong start to the third quarter.  The Green Wave scored three consecutive goals in the third, with Dillon Confalone scoring his second goal of the game and Tommy Fowler netting two more.  Delbarton also shut Summit out for the entire third quarter, allowing them to enter the fourth period ahead 6-3.

In the fourth quarter, both teams displayed their talents.  Right away, both teams scored twice to bring the score to 8-5.  Then, Summit tightened the gap by netting two more goals.  The Green Wave struck mesh once again to bring the game to 9-7.  In the last couple minutes of the game, Summit scored once to make it 9-8, but did not have enough time to strike a tying goal.

This match between two of New Jersey’s powerhouse lacrosse teams marked only the second time Delbarton’s opponents scored over five goals, showing that they can suppress some of the most talented offenses around.  The consistency in the Green Wave’s offense allows Delbarton to be a scoring threat against any team.  Together, Delbarton’s strengths on both sides of the ball have proven to be unbeatable.

The Green Wave furthered their spotless record to eight consecutive wins.  As the top ranked team in New Jersey, Delbarton will be looking to enhance their rank on the national scale.  With four games left in the season, Delbarton stand a strong opportunity to have a perfect 12-0 record.
