Big Regular Season Finale: Chaminade vs Delbarton

In high school lacrosse, there is always a buildup of excitement when elite teams travel out of state to play other teams at their level.  On Saturday May 18, Chaminade, one of New York’s finest, travel to Delbarton, the top team in New Jersey, in a battle between two powerhouses.

The history between Chaminade and Delbarton goes a long way back, creating a strong rivalry between both teams.  Recently, the Chaminade Flyers have been in control of the matchup, but this year, the Green Wave has gone undefeated.

From 2005 to 2008, Delbarton claimed every game.  Some were blowout wins, but were down to the wire, like the Green Waves 8-7 overtime win in 2007.  Then in 2009, Chaminade turned the tables in a powerful 13-2 victory.  Since that win, the Flyers kept the power, continuing their win streak through 2012.  The last two of Chaminade’s victories were down to the wire matches.

This matchup ends the regular season for the two teams, both of which had great years.  Chaminade is currently 14-1, putting giving them the 5th rank in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings.  The Flyers’ power starts at the defense.  In 11 out of 15 games, Chaminade held their opponents to five goals or less.  With a great offense to compliment their defense, the Flyers acquired a +85 goal difference.

So far, Delbarton’s perfect record earned the Green Wave the 9th rank in the nation and the top team in New Jersey.  In their 15 games, Delbarton scored in the double digits on nine occasions.  The most goals the New Jersey boys ever allowed opponents to score in one game were eight goals.  Throughout the year, the Green Wave has acquired an astounding +110 goal difference.

Currently, there is much speculation that the winner of this match will earn a spot in the top 5 of DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings.  Chaminade has a superb 14-1 record, but at 15-0, Delbarton is undefeated.  If the Flyers win, they secure the position they have already achieved.  A Green Wave victory completes their undefeated season and can very well boost them ahead of Chaminade on the national scale.

The opening faceoff is at 3pm this Saturday.  With both teams having top notch season, this game is certain to be one of the most intense meetings between Chaminade and Delbarton.   The two teams will be putting everything they have out on the field, for a victory could be what it takes to secure a spot in the nation’s top 5 teams for both teams.
